Chavis, Jr. a global business leader, educator, and longtime civil rights activist, was elected interim president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association at the group’s annual meeting here Wednesday, NNPA Chairman Cloves Campbell has announced.
WILMINGTON, N.C. (NNPA) – Howard University Journalism Professor Clint C. Wilson II’s broad criticism of the Black Press proves that he needs a “reality check,” said Ben Chavis, leader of a group of 1970s activists known as the Wilmington Ten.

Lawsuit Lost Sight of Historic Discrimination
Once again, The Sun is notorious for publishing biased, apartheid-like editorials such as the opinion entitled “Drawing districts.” The focus of the Jan. 23 editorial was on the established congressional district of U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, which is now the target of a lawsuit recently filed in federal court by two men that allege the boundaries of Brown’s district violate their constitutional rights.

Development Plans Cause Controversy in Pittsboro
"I'm speaking for African-Americans who are not here and also for poor whites who are not here," said civil rights activist Dr. Ben Chavis.
Chavis, a former national executive director for the NAACP and an environmental activist, says the park can create opportunities for people who need it most.
"We need more jobs in this community," said Chavis. "We need better housing in this community.

NCCU students retrace historic silent march for justice
Durham Mayor Bill Bell introduced civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis, who had been sentenced to 34 years in prison after his involvement in the Wilmington Ten, when nine black men and one white woman were unjustly sentenced to a combined total of 282 maximum years in prison in 1972 after a conviction of alleged arson, assault and rioting charges. Chavis was 24 at the time and had been organizing a boycott of Wilmington schools due to hostile race relations.
